As orthopedic surgery Trainee I was enrolled in rota between different departments such as : • Trauma and general orthopedic surgery
• Arthroscopy surgery
• Pelvis Surgery
• Hand Surgery
• Ilizarov and deformity correction surgery • Arthroplasty unit
• Pediatric Orthopedic surgery
In the Hospital my duties and responsibilities were divided between:
1)Emergency Department (ED): Assess patients following ATLS protocols, manage initial treatments like X-rays, splints, casts, and stabilizations.
2)Orthopaedic Ward: Oversee daily ward rounds, Patient clerking and ensure effective handovers.
3)Operating Theatre: Assist and sometimes lead surgeries under consultant supervision, check operation lists for necessary preparations (e.g., side marks, shaving, doublecheck implants and drills).
3)Outpatient Clinics:Conduct patient assessments, make treatment decisions, and perform procedures such as intra-articular injections and wound management.
4)Communication and Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with consultants about patient cases and care plans.
- Explain management plans to patients and their relatives in layman’s terms.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and case discussions. 5)Professional Development and Leadership:
- Teach and train medical, nursing, and support staff.
- Participate in audits, quality assurance processes, and scientific events to stay updated with evidence-based medicine.
6)Administrative Duties:
- Attend daily morning meetings and weekly case-based discussions.
- Document and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
1) Responsible for ward admissions for elective and emergency cases ,
2) pre-operative preparation of patients :Patients education, examination , drawing labs and surgical site marking.
3) post operative care of patients :assessment of Vitals ,Neuro-vascular status assessment , dressing and casting or splinting.
4) ER : Assessment and evaluation of Trauma patients , performing the first aid according to ATLS Protocol and taking role in MDT .
5) Assisting in operations :
Arthroscopy , Arthroplasty , Trauma , Reconstruction , spine , pelvis and pediatric orthopedic surgery.
