PROJECT BRIEF:
· The Ghawar field reservoir pressure is currently maintained from the injection of filtered and de- aerated seawater from Qurayyah Seawater Treatment Plant (QSTP) which contains high concentrations of sulfate ions. According to EXPEC-ARC compatibility studies (internal Saudi Aramco Study), the formation brines of ‘Ain Dar Lower Fadhli (ANDR LFDL) and Fazran Lower Fadhli (FRZ LFDL) reservoirs contain a high concentration of calcium ions which under reservoir conditions react with the sulfate ions in the injected seawater water to form hard calcium sulfate scales. This would result in reservoir scale plugging, leading to disruptive well interventions that incur production losses as well as reduced oil recovery. Seawater from QSTP shall therefore, undergo further treatment to reduce sulfate content prior to being injected in the ANDR LFDL and FZRN LFDL reservoirs to avoid damaging of the reservoir. The purpose of facility is to supply low sulfate (< 200 ppm) injection water for reservoir pressure maintenance to support the proposed production of 100 MBD and 75 MBD Arab Extra Light increments from ‘Ain Dar and Fazran fields respectively. This will support the corporate objective to remain a reliable supplier of oil and gas. This objective will be met through installing seawater sulfate removal facilities at the ‘Ain Dar Water Injection Plant (ADWIP) area to prevent reservoir scale plugging in ‘Ain Dar and Fazran Lower Fadhli reservoirs.
